GRENKE promotes chess through extensive and comprehensive activities. We have supported the Baden-Baden chess centre (Bundesstützpunkt Schach) and the Ooser Schachgesellschaft Baden-Baden 1922 e.V. chess society for over 14 years and the “Chess Classic” – the unofficial fast chess world championship held annually in Mainz – from 2005 to 2010. In France, GRENKE LOCATION SAS, sponsors the Cercle d’Echecs de Bischwiller chess society.

One of the local German groups supported, Ooser Schachgesellschaft, has been the most successful chess club in the country and is one of the top ten by membership. The club has won the German men’s team championship for seven consecutive years, from

2006 to 2012; in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012 they won the German club cup, were among the top five teams in the European Club Cup 2007 to 2011, and were runners-up in 2008. The women’s team won the German championship in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012.

Above and beyond major sporting success, we are particularly delighted that the first men’s team of the Ooser Schachgesellschaft Baden-Baden is being led by the reigning world champion Viswanathan Anand from India and Magnus Carlsen, the number 1 in the world rankings.
